Weber Classification of Ankle Fractures

Classification:

Weber A
Fracture line of the fibula below the ankle joint
(Stable Fracture)

Weber B
Fracture line of the fibula at the level of ankle joint
(Variable stability)
+/- Fracture of Medial Malleolus/Deltoid ligament Rupture (Unstable Fracture)

Weber C
Fracture line of the fibula above the level of ankle joint +
Fracture of the medial malleolus or Deltoid ligament rupture (Unstable Fracture)

Teaching Points:

Weber A: Transverse fracture below the ankle joint
Weber B: Spiral Fracture line at the level of ankle joint.
(Consider the medial end of the fracture line to classify B or C and not the lateral end).
Weber C: Fracture line above the level of ankle joint. Increased medial clear space.
